As we come around the corner and into a New Year, I would like to reflect back on just a few of our accomplishments at St. John UMC. Last year we began by putting together a list of four goals we wanted to achieve in 2017:

  1. To finish the Kitchen remodel,
  2. To hire a Facilities Manager,
  3. To build a stronger relationship with our friends at the St. John Towers, and
  4. To increase our outreach to young adults and young families.

All four of our goals were met!

One of the best examples of putting our ministries and facilities together was the Saturday lunch that was offered to the residents at the Towers in mid-November. We had 80 residents to attend from the Towers, and we had 22 volunteers from our church, including youth and young adults who served along with others that prepared soups, sandwiches, and desserts. This intergenerational event was a joyful time for all and a great success.

The new Fellowship class is growing, and the young adults are engaging in mission and fellowship events.

As always we never want to take for granted the wonderful music that we experience each Sunday, but especially the wonderful music during Advent. Our Christmas Eve service was a highlight for many in the community, as well as for the congregation.

This Sunday we will celebrate with our Confirmation students joining the church. Despite the challenges of any downtown congregation, we see the hope of our future in these young members. And we can also be hopeful knowing that the downtown is growing, and we are a part of its growth. We want to continue to offer Christ to a hurting world and to seek more ways to share his love. We will have a Leadership event on January 20. Be in prayer as we consider how and where God is calling us forth to serve.

I realize that we cannot list all the many, many ways that we served Christ during the past year, but I hope that sharing these highlights will give you a sense of where we have been and where we are going.

Blessings to you in this New Year,

Jody Alderman
