The St. John Choir is made up of both volunteer and professional musicians. In worship, they are drawn together by St. John’s tradition of singing music which has theological and artistic integrity, whatever its style or age, whether written in the Renaissance or last year, whether in the classical or the folk tradition. The choir’s primary purpose is to provide vocal music for worship. Their anthems and hymns are selected to illuminate the lectionary-appointed scripture for the day.
The choir also offers occasional concerts. They have performed under the direction of many prominent guest conductors, including John Rutter, Joseph Flummerfelt, Alice Parker, Ann Jones, Mack Wilberg, Andre Thomas, Henry Leck, Eric Nelson, Brad Holmes, and Amanda Quist. In the summer of 2001 they enjoyed a concert tour to Scotland and Northern England, and in 1997 they served as choir in residence at Westminster Abbey, along with a sister choir from Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, Augusta.
An annual fall choir retreat provides time for intense rehearsals, intimate worship, and delightful fellowship. Two professionally produced recordings feature the choir’s work.
An informal audition is required for membership in the St. John Choir. Contact Jamie Garvey. jcgarvey@stjohnaugusta.org
